摇滚经典歌曲再回顾

最近听一些Bob Marley的雷鬼Reggae音乐,Red, red, wine,就想到UB40,这
样一溯源就想到当年卫华的两盒摇滚金曲。幸好出国磁带都带上了,这两盒还都耐
听。前一阵子完全扎到theBeatles里面去了,收获多多,以至于觉得迪伦都不够味
了。话又说回来,英美摇滚乐风格多样,一家之言终究是不够的。也是,有人喜欢
滚石乐队,就不怎么甲壳虫了。卫华的解说虽然夸张,有些不精确之处,但在那个
时代,也难得可贵。

今天翻听金曲 I,这一首Bob Marley的歌带词先贴一下。Bob Marley是牙买卫雷
鬼音乐的先驱与打造功臣,魅力不可阻挡:

谈到早先摇滚史,一般人推到Bill Haley和Chuck Berry。当然再向前推,节奏布鲁
斯,黑人灵歌,以至于爵士乐,就太过了。其实就是Bill Haley和Chuck Berry都是
紧密结奏型,以至于猫王Presley都是。这也许对早先摇滚乐手是不小的提示,但对
于八十年代末才接触摇滚乐的我等,就有点远了。经典金曲一中有Bill Haley的Rock
around the clock,Chuck Berry的Johnny B Goode,Chuck Berry是迪伦的偶像,
就象猫王与Little Richard是theBeatles的偶象。可是我接受摇滚乐还是从迪伦的
Blowing in the Wind后,theBeatles大约也是那时候红火。猫王的歌Love me tender,

迪伦的随风飘去Blowing in the Wind耳熟如详,就不Link了。此一贴我想贴另一位
够早期的灵魂人物Jimi Hendrix的Purple Haze。六十年代摇滚乐盛大,英国与美国
的乐手们的造旨不分彼此。Jimi Hendrix死得很早,但歌曲都很珍贵:

六十年代摇滚乐疯逛,虽然主体在英美,但融汇世界各地特色。比如雷鬼就融合了非
洲、牙买加中南美的音乐。关健还是有了这个运动,反战,花童,学生运动此起彼
伏,给乐手们提供了无限背景。多次摇滚盛会,比如说Woodstock,Jimi就很风云。
但Woodstock上最让我惊心的还是一首Janis Joplin的歌Work Me Lord:

六十年代乐队不少,名称都是响当当的,比如Rollingstone,Doors,Led Zeppelin,
The Who,Creedence Clearwater Revival,Jefferson Airplane,Crosby, Stills
& Nash,Grateful Dead,Quicksilver Messenger,Buffalo Springfield,Lovin'
Spoonful,Cream等,此不提theBeatles, Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel等家喻
户晓的组合。就是六十年代末打出的一批Pink Floyd,David Bowie,Velvet Underground,
那时能人辈出,嬉皮反战花童毒品横飞,真是英美精神解放的一个大时代。现在结
的果实,想在世界政治的模式上都能见出。真正的摇滚乐,确实脱不开人类本质的
方方面面,但综究而言,性与政治,自由,精神解放以挖掘开拓人本身的创造力。

摇滚歌曲探源,还是找到不少好歌。按卫华的二十首金曲,一步就跑过七十年代直冲
九十年代Sting之辈,那样不合算。一般市面上蛮响的多是英国乐队,而探源就不能
不多提美国乐队,那时候美国人商业化还比不得英国。今天早晨细读,才算对五六
十年代理清了头绪。摇滚乐的源头当然是美国,节奏布鲁斯Rhythm & Blues与西部
歌谣Country & Western,以后加勒比,民谣,Pop,重摇滚与朋克风的介入,那是
后来的。源头理不清晰就介入纷繁的当今摇滚乐世界,当然谁都是一团雾水。我还
是认真一下对待这个英美文化现象,图书馆的资料多,网上管子里音乐精彩,就缺
乏一整理。整理一下也是对自己多年杂听的一次综汇。前两年对theBeatles沉迷一
番,这么多年一直听迪伦,家里的磁带CD/VCR/DVD多多,歌本多多,就缺乏时间经
络一下。

R&B的白人始祖是Bill Haley,从黑人那时汲取R&B的精华,当1951年电台主持人Alan
Freed首次使用Rock and Roll这个字,预示着摇滚乐的诞生。猫王承继孟菲斯的R&B以
及纳什维尔的C&W,当然C&W是白人音乐。这么说,摇滚乐诞生于黑白交合,当然这
只是雏形。前面引了几首多是黑人或牙买加音乐风,没有按时间秩序来。现在补过,
添几首原初的白人音乐,美国本土的哟:

民谣不是西部风格,C&W更有美国本土的特色,而民谣,一般将之推及上英国清教徒
Puritan的五月花号,后来就被人称为传统民谣Traditional Folk Song,以区别近
代发展出更具思想内涵及进行式节拍的现代民谣。现代民谣的先驱,也是迪伦的偶
象Woody Guthrie,当时现代民谣正处于发展阶段,1960年后经迪伦与贝兹的呼号,
全美民谣风潮才爆发。迪伦是以民谣起家的,为摇滚乐注入第三种血液。代表作是
那首Blow in the Wind,此歌后由John, Peter & Mary传遍全世界,得承认,迪伦
本人的声音并不算理想。故而有人把他称为Guthrie's Children,我再贴两首歌,
以显示现代民谣风。迪伦后来走向电声Like a Rolling Stone,也是受当时乐风的
影响,尤其是英国乐队theBeatles, Rollingstones等的冲击。

人勾起人们对那个时代的一点印象:

目前美国市面上的音乐分类百花八门Country,Folk,Irish, Jazz/Lounge, R&B, Gospel Soul,Rock,Pop,Latin,Rap,Dance,Movie,还除了古典,歌剧,百老汇,外国音乐,Meditation,
苏非,格利高利圣咏等等。就早先的门类来说,黑白分明,后来混血了,又混同Folk,
Pop,拉丁是一种在混。我想到早先的buddy Holly,前头忘提到,正好家里有一盒
他的Greatest Hits,可以细听听:


这里面能听到早期崔健的摇滚和声进行,又有点节奏布鲁斯型,看来C&W也不纯粹。

Buddy的摇滚与猫王的音乐比较起来,更为质朴;在歌唱方面,猫王运用很多黑人语
言,Buddy带有较纯粹的C&W风,也许是更正宗的纳什维尔风。这与猫王那种孟菲斯
乡土之音相成趣;猫王是长发的先锋,Buddy却是“超人”那种白领阶级的典型;在
整体上,猫王更性、暴力和邪恶,Buddy显健康、活泼和完美。Buddy是拓荒时期摇
滚乐的完善者。

1959年2月3日,Buddy在巡回演唱途中坠机身亡。不少酷爱摇滚的乐迷把他的死当作
纯粹摇滚乐的终结。唉,其时还不到六十年代啊。

周末在图书馆借了几本摇滚史的书,有一本大学课本,不少资料片,CD无量,各种风
格的,原来美国通俗音乐如此丰富,真是百花齐放,也衬着后面商业吵作的心机。
本来想在五十年代再多列一些,但何有止境,我还是依照原先的思维,把Fats Domino,
小猫王Gene Vincent,还有Jerry Lee Lewis都只好割爱。只提Rockabilly中的Don
& Phil的兄弟组合Everly Brothers以及他们一线后的和声承继。这一首Bye Bye Love应
该很有名:


Everly Brother手中,Rockabilly风格开始变质,削弱了跳跃与动感,取而代之的是
一种绝妙的和声重唱,这直接影响到后来的Beach Boys, Mamas and Papas以及Simon
& Garfunkel一对极有名的组合。

五十年代摇滚乐兴起,但好景不长。记得若干年前去克利夫兰摇滚博物馆,现在才知
道选在俄亥俄州的克利夫兰的原由,还是占名人Alan Freed在此用电台引导音乐革
命。白人唱黑人歌曲,在当时种族隔离的美国简直不可以。摇滚乐的灵魂是R&B,黑
人的血,主流社会反对,把摇滚乐与共运联系起来。当然,摇滚乐在五十年代底进入
疆局,也许是第一波兴起劲头过猛,其实六十年代底又有类似一次淡季。五十年代休
止一是前面提到的Buddy飞机出事,猫王参军,Little Richard转向宗教,后来对摇
滚乐反悔。Jerry Lee Lewis的摇滚生涯终结,源于与十三年的表妹婚姻丑闻,Chuck
Berry坐牢了,加上电台DJ受贿的丑闻不断,还有什么呢?我以为歌都太中学生了一
点,短了些。当然这只是音乐革命的发起,黑人总算凭音乐在美国争了口气,这三十
年代洛尔卡在纽约就料定,洛是看了哈莱姆的黑人音乐,对于这复兴西班牙弗拉门戈的
灵魂人物而言,黑人的音乐中载着新大陆的灵魂!

五六十年代中休的阶段,当然Pop一直流行,舞曲盛行。此时美国人并不很有欣赏力,
摇滚乐象爵士乐一样,要得到欧洲大方之家的鉴定。虽然爵士乐一直为欧洲严肃音
乐家在乐曲中使用,法国的,俄国的。而摇滚乐,倒是英国人吃得透,以后英国人
入侵,倒促使美国本土人的觉醒。这下盖上了英国皇家大印的(theBeatles受过爵!),
没二话说了。英国摇滚乐大举入侵,以theBeatles, Rolling Stones为先锋。Rolling
Stones的音乐我一直不是很欣赏,但欣赏的人大有人在,我还是引卫华磁带中的一
首:

摇滚乐早期的音乐不一定耐听,但早先的发展传奇,真耐得住笔墨。我兼读书兼听管
子,往往还是要找回源头去听。这样摇滚就不只是摇滚了,美国流行音乐丰富,门
类繁多,顺此也全盘了解一番。幸好以前注重过几个乐队,尤其是迪伦的专辑,现
在看来,水到渠成可以全盘吸收了,这是万幸。

五十年代有所谓big 6,前头已提得差不多。再把名称列一下:Presley, Richard,
Lewis, Holly, Berry, Domino. Richar就是Little Richard,Domino全名Fats Domino,
是南方新奥尔良音乐的代表,当然节奏布鲁斯。Lewis的台风,弹钢琴,绝对震憾,
那时还有摇滚小提琴呢。我把遗望的这三大各取一曲,以观台风:

美国流行乐丰富多样,也透出社会文化的丰富性。比如有一类Latin,就是西班牙语
歌,以后又有Latin Rock。我不知是在摇滚乐内谈还是摇滚乐外谈,本来门类是方
面整理用的(外),当然不否认流派多样(内),甚至更多是商业促销(更外)。林奈说,
不分门别类,许多东西无法辨别清晰,另外,没有名,许多东西就丢失掉了,看来
,谈谈分门别类是基本科学方法。无论在摇滚乐外还是在内,比如二十世纪初的爵
士乐,五十年代一轮摇滚兴起,六十年代又复合出爵士摇滚(Blood, Sweat and Tears, Chicago, etc) 。爵士乐到六十年代已正规且复杂,专业级,非一般摇滚
乐手,业余音乐家所能指掌。

前面提到过民谣摇滚,由迪伦发起的。雷鬼摇滚,牙买牙的,就是五十年代末期摇
滚内部也分化出许多风格,一般来说,按音乐的轻重(黑人好称黑白),可以分下面
一些种类,这只是五十年代摇滚乐内部。

当然,左翼与民谣的种子开始散布,直至迪伦出现。

前面提到的香蕉船歌,Day-O,此种民谣一般去过加勒比海一带的人都听说过的Calypso即是。谈到民谣与左翼四五十、六十进年代初的情形,我还想写几个字。迪伦推举Guthrie自然有他一番原初的道理,前两天迪伦到中国巡回演出,一般媒体报导不好。西方媒体以为他不象他们期待的政治了,中国歌迷普遍听不清。其实迪伦演唱会多是那么情形,当年反阿富汗战争在Madison Square Garden的演出我去听过,不与人对话,唱词不清,即令是熟悉的曲调都被他另唱,几万人头攒动,各唱各的,谁管他的词与曲?

左翼与民谣的关系,恐怕民谣源于劳苦农工的生活抒发,说是阿巴拉契亚山民,我是看过一盘阿巴拉契亚山区的民谣,自然抒发,虽源于五月花,但也美国地理化。而四五六十年代初的左翼民谣,确实承绪这一段生命。与Woody Guthrie同行还有一位Pete Seeger不能不提:

当年喜欢唱Sad Movies这首歌,但不知道它属于摇滚歌曲。在玛雅咖啡,我提过,我喜欢摇滚和爵士乐,但是唱不下来,也弹不出来。但这首歌,我还是能把握的。

回土干,回顾摇滚歌曲,总想起那个时代,这一首是那个时代的旋律。虽然,一般人
把旋律上口的任何歌曲都称作Pop,中文说流行歌曲。也是摇滚乐一大源头,我前面
提到了民谣传统,到了小罗斯福那个时代,有些左,Woody Guthrie确也帮小罗唱
歌助选的。

这也是后来摇滚歌曲反映大时代,人权、反种族隔离、反战的重要源头,不能不提。
前些天去中国城顺便参观了一下美华博物馆,主要设计是Maya lin(DC韩战纪念碑)。
